First pair of earrings

Before 2005, any of my jewelry making skills was non-existent. It never really crossed my mind.

One day I thought "I want to make a pair of earrings for myself." I also already have the specifications of the earrings in my head: long with blue/teal/turquoise tone. That was the time when long earrings were gaining the momentum in the market. That could be why I wanted them long.

So off to the local beading store I went, picked out some beads (a couple of small turquoise stones, a couple of blue tone glass beads, a few other teal beads that I don't remember what they were made of), a foot of metal chain (some base metal chain in a dark shade, 'cos sterling silver was too expensive), and headpins.

I remember cutting the chain into 4 quarters, I would use half the foot for the earrings I wanted, and each earring would be 1/4 foot long (3"). Beads were hanged along the chain, gradually with a few more toward the ends. I was using a plier and a wire cutter I found from the tool box, and wasn't too happy that I couldn't close the headpins with a perfectly round circle. I wasn't aware that round nose plier existed.

I drew this for a better picture of what my first pair looked like.

Nonetheless, I liked what I made, and I wore them for about a month. My sister came to visit one day and I gave them away because she said she liked them too. The same day she went home, she said "The earrings that you made, I already got compliments about them from two guys on the same day!"

That was my first pair of earrings. It was the beginning of something new. What was your first creation?

  1. That was a very nice story. How great was it that your creation was loved by so many people for the get go? My first creation was when I was under 10. I made little dolls and clothing from J-cloths (disposable towels for washing dishes and cleaning) I remember being so proud of myself. I wish that I had kept some.
